2. 26-123 Discussion and Possible Actions on a City Council Statement Related to Super Bowl Safety and Affirmation of Support for Immigrant Communities, and Policy Regarding Immigration Enforcement Activities within the City of Santa Clara
I am in support of policy 056. The City of Santa Clara should be a sanctuary city that protects and supports its immigrant community and does not work with ICE in any capacity.
As a proud daughter of Chinese and Filipina immigrants, and a dedicated community organizer with SIREN, I, Kimberly Woo, urge the City of Santa Clara to immediately pass the draft policy and Vice Mayor Gonzalez’s memo to protect our communities before ICE terrorizes the Superbowl. Vice Mayor Gonzalez’s memo would establish noncooperation policies with ICE, unless legally required, and collaborate with immigrant rights advocates to create safe site protocols and training. We keep us safe!
Please pass the draft policy and protect our community! ICE has demonstrated unwillingness to uphold law and order, and instead unleashes indiscriminate violence. Santa Clara residents deserve to live safely in our city without threats of detainment, invasive searches, and surveillance. I implore you to do what is right by the will of the people.
When I first immigrated to the US as a child, my family lived in a small apartment in Santa Clara. There, as I adjusted to my new life, I was safe to learn and grow. Everyone deserves the same right to opportunity without fear. Please adopt clear, long-term policies to prohibit local law enforcement from working with ICE & prevent ICE from using city data to track residents. We need to fight back against the cruelty of this administration and protect our people. Do not let our communities down.
I would like to express my support for this agenda item. Please do not allow ICE to terrorize our neighbors on city property! This is an important historical moment, and I hope the city of Santa Clara will do everything in its power to protect immigrants.
I'm disappointed that this milquetoast proposal has taken so long and is being put in place less than a week before the Super Bowl. If you really cared about your majority IMMIGRANT population, ICE would NOT be allowed at the Super Bowl. ICE should NOT be allowed IN Santa Clara PERIOD. They are LITERALLY KILLING and KIDNAPPING citizens in the street. You are allowing the potential for death and injury to come to us. That's on your hands. Every family separated this week, know its on YOUR hands.
