4. 21-524 Joint Study Session to review Proposed FY 2021/22 and FY 2022/23 Biennial Operating Budget and FY 2021/22 Capital improvement Program Budget Adjustments and to review the Proposed FY 2021/22 Municipal Fee Schedule
I oppose the proposed city budget due to the drastic cuts towards Roberta Jones Junior Theatre. As a past performer in RJJT, I was given a safe space and community to grow and learn as an artist. RJJT is an asset to Santa Clara because the arts are a form of communication that fosters self-expression, creativity, empathy, and innovation; essentially giving us the resources we need to succeed in all aspects of life. Art builds community and RJJT is a hallmark of our Santa Clara community.
As a 10yr participant of Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, whose sister was preparing to perform in 'Mary Poppins' at the start of the COVID-19 shutdown, I oppose the city's proposal to divest from the program. RJJT shaped who I am today by providing excellent theatrical, public speaking, and leadership experience, as well as lifelong friend. While I understand the past year has been difficult budget-wise, I hope that the Council will do the right thing and prioritize this priceless community.
I am opposing the proposed city budget because it includes drastic funding cuts to the Roberta Jones Junior Theatre. I grew up in Santa Clara and RJJT was the most influential program I participated in as a child. It helped me gain confidence and feel comfortable with public speaking, and taught me responsibility. It allowed me to be creative and have fun, and I built a strong community of friends. It would be a disservice to the Santa Clara community to remove funding from this amazing program.
