With multiple new developments coming on line, BART extension and Caltrain electrification - It is now time to start working on an updated Santa Clara Station Area plan along with VTA and the community. We need to kick off a precise plan process for the area that complements the DCTF efforts.
Please make Vision Zero a priority. Our bicycle and pedestrian plans call for its adoption in the future, but why wait simply to set a goal of zero traffic fatalities and major injuries? Vision Zero is about safe streets for everybody, no matter how they may choose—or need—to get around.
The Santa Clara Station Area has an opportunity to have focused development as a transit hub in the City of Santa Clara. With the BART extension, and approved development near the station, the previous focus area study from 2007 is out of date. I support working with VTA and the community on a precise plan for the station which complements the ongoing downtown precise plan process and will set a vision for the station area for the future.
Vision Zero, Petitions Subject 'C', though laudable is misguided. Manually powered bicycle accidents will never approach zero where cars are present. Recently I saw a well-geared bicyclist forge through a red light at the Kiely-Pruneridge intersection. Further up Kiely I saw an electrically powered bike make a full & complete stop at Forbes as the light changed. Both bikes were traveling at about the same speed yet the electrically powered bike was able to stop. Manual bikes need isolated lanes.
